License Exam Sessions
The Williamsburg Area Amateur Radio Club provides testing for all levels of amateur licenses (Technician, General, and Amateur Extra.)
Testing is available weekly, by appointment. When you are ready to take an exam, please email ve@k4rc.net with your contact information to set up a testing session. Our VE coordinator will arrange for 3 VEs to administer any exam(s) you wish to take. Typical opportunities are most Saturday & Monday mornings, and Wednesdays midday – locations vary in the Williamsburg VA area. Contact Joe W4YVA at ve@k4rc.net.
Additionally, we can often conduct an exam session at 5PM on the second Tuesday of each month, just before our monthly club meeting at the Toano firehouse. This is also by appointment only as we need to arrange for 3 VEs to arrive early. Contact Joe W4YVA at ve@k4rc.net.
We usually have an open test session each spring and fall at the James City County Volunteer Fire Department, 3135 Forge Rd, Toano, Va. 23168. The next date will be listed here when it is confirmed. These are open sessions with walk-ins allowed but pre-registration is preferred. Contact our VE coordinator at ve@k4rc.net

On the day of the test, examinees must bring:
- An FCC Registration Number (FRN) if you are applying for a new license. It is free and only takes a few minutes on the FCC’s website. FRN instructions are here: https://www.fcc.gov/new-users-guide-getting-started-universal-licensing-system-uls and in this video https://www.fcc.gov/rofrn.
- A copy of your license if you are upgrading (copies will be collected and submitted to FCC)
- A government issued photo ID
- A check or money order made out to ‘ARRL-VEC’ for $15 (no cash is preferred but we can accept it)
- For candidates under age 18 the fee is reduced, only $5
- A pen for filling out the Form 605 application
- Pencils for filling out the answer sheet
- A simple calculator if you feel you need one — no smart devices (i.e. watch or phone) will be permitted
After successfully completing an exam candidates may continue upgrading for the same $15 fee at this session only. If a candidate fails an exam, it may be retaken for an additional $15 exam fee. Also, if you are sitting for a new Technician license, the FCC will want a $35 license fee to be paid separately and subsequently to the FCC to get the license issued. This fee does not apply to upgrades.

DIRECTIONS: From Williamsburg, take Route 60 (Richmond Road) toward Richmond (West) past Norge and as you get into Toano, there will be a grassy median in the road. As the road begins a strong curve to the right, turn LEFT onto Forge Rd (just before the Farmer’s Market). The Fire Station is immediately on your left. The testing area is on the right side of the building in the Roanoke Classroom.
